Finance for IT Professionals

Computing professionals do not need to be financial experts but they must be financially literate to be able to grasp the essential financial reality of any situation.

This comprehensive, three-day course will equip participants with in-depth knowledge of core concepts and practices in finance, enabling full and fluent discussion of financial matters, as well as the means to implement that knowledge in a practical way.

As those without formal training in finance advance in their careers they are increasingly confronted with financial questions, financial techniques and financial terminology that is often difficult to grasp. Professionals with responsibility for strategic IT decision-making are often presented with many challenges, but without proper financial knowledge plans can be difficult to implement. Cormac Lucey was born in Dublin and grew up in County Down and County Mayo. He was educated in UCD and qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1987. He has since worked in the financial industry, focusing on corporate finance. Between 2002 and 2007 he served as special adviser to the Tanaiste, Michael McDowell.

He has developed and currently presents the Diploma in Corporate finance (at Chartered Accountants Ireland) and the Diploma in Business Finance (at the Irish Management Institute). He also teaches finance at the Michael Smurfit Graduate School (University College Dublin).

He contributes regularly to discussions on public affairs and is a weekly columnist on economics with the Irish edition of The Sunday Times. He has contributed to several books including authoring Plan B – How Leaving the Euro Can Save Ireland and co-authoring The Business Compass – Perspectives on Business Ethics.
